Start-Stop Not Working in Abu Dhabi? Why Your Battery Is Usually the Reason
If you have noticed start-stop not working in Abu Dhabi traffic, you are not alone. The engine used to switch off at red lights on Airport Road or in Corniche queues, and now it just keeps idling. Sometimes a message says start-stop is unavailable; sometimes there is no message at all.
In many cases nothing is broken. Start-stop systems are designed to stay off whenever conditions are not right, and Abu Dhabi heat creates plenty of those conditions. But when the system stays off for weeks, it is often the car's way of telling you the battery is no longer strong enough.
This guide explains how the system decides when to stop the engine, which reasons are normal, and which ones mean the battery or its sensor need checking.
How a Start-Stop System Decides to Work
Start-stop switches the engine off when the car is stationary and restarts it when you lift off the brake or press the clutch. Before every stop, the engine computer and battery management system check a list of conditions. If any one of them is not met, the engine keeps running.
Most cars with start-stop have an intelligent battery sensor (IBS) clipped to the negative battery terminal. It measures current, voltage and temperature so the car can estimate how much charge the battery holds and whether it can restart the engine reliably. If that estimate is too low, start-stop is switched off to protect your next restart.
Normal Reasons Start-Stop Stays Off
These are not faults. The system is simply waiting for better conditions.
- The AC is working hard. If the cabin is far hotter than the set temperature, the car keeps the engine running so the compressor can keep cooling. In an Abu Dhabi summer this can mean start-stop rarely activates.
